28mm Ronin.

What about this heat in the UK (28C yesterday and talking about 31C today, not good for a flame haired pale Irishman)), feels like I have a reservoir in my underwear, no air conditioning and takes me back to my days in the kitchens but anyway...........

A Ronin was a Samurai with no lord or master during the feudal period (1185-1868) of Japan. A samurai became masterless after the death or fall of his master, or after the loss of his master's favour or privilege.

The word Ronin literally means "wave man". The term originated in the Nara and Heian periods, when it referred to a serf who had fled or deserted his master's lands. It then came to be used for a samurai who had lost his master.

See here for a tale of the most famous Ronin  47 Ronin

The figures are mostly Old Glory I believe, the rest of my collection are Perry Miniatures, during the games my fellow rejects could not tell the difference between leaders and heroes and regular troops so I had to colour the bases so they stood out a little.

  23. Very nice Fran. You've just reminded me: I've finished a squad of Human Marines plus some support units and an Asari commando squad for my Mass Effect Games. Forgot to colour code the bases for Tomorrow's War. Ah well.

  24. "Wave man" reminds me of Unsui, or "clouds and water" which is a term used to describe novice Zen monks who are supposed to drift without attachment to ideas or form.

  35. This is very educational with Japanese terms, especially if we remember them after seeing them used in the right context.

Over here we don't even understand those French temperatures you guys are using from the EU.

It was 89 F here just before the tornado struck and that's what cooled things off, for a while. The time I talked about 91 F being too hot would be 32.5 C it looks like.

Here's a handy conversion chart from the New York City subway where somebody noticed the numbered street stops on the Number 6 Green Line, if they were Fahrenheit, would mathematically equal 5 degree jumps in Celsius, within 0.6C at the worst, up to 103 which was their hottest ever in NYC. It starts with Toity-Toid Street, 33rd, running up the East side of Manhattan:

    33 F 0 C
    42 F 5 C
    51 F 10C
    59 F 15C
    68 F 20C
    77 F 25C
    86 F 30C
    96 F 35C
    103 F 40C

Since I have 87F right now, looks like I am within a rc hair of where you are temperature-wise, speaking of red hair.

  36. Ronin are pretty much the original Japanese B.A.M.F.s, also, I'm trying to remember if that had something to do with the starting of the Yakuza.

  39. Wow that IS hot for Britain! The Ronin were an odd bunch though. The freest men in feudal Japan, yet they begged for bondage. Bang up job in the details, my friend!
