Angry Movie Lurker Honest Review 61: Immortals 2011 (3 STARS)

Wasn't expecting a lot from this but it wasn't too bad with Theseus (Henry Cavill) a stonemason who witnesses his mothers death at the hands of Hyperions forces, has been chosen by Zeus to fight against the ruthless King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke, plays it well with lots of scenery chewing but I like him) who is searching for the long lost Epirus bow that can free the Titans who were imprisoned in a mountain by the Gods (seen at the beginning).

This movie has Greek mythology all over it with Oracles, a Minotaur (a different twist on that legend), Titans, Gods (Poseidon, Athena......), the bad guys are great (cruel) especially the lackeys, good action when it comes, traitors and some good effects and some over the fecking top effects but all in all worth a watch.

It's a different take on Greek mythology as I discovered when I referenced some of the main characters in this film but that's movies and directors for you.....

  1. We've been talking about seeing this one. I'm a fan of Rourke (even after his face got messed up). There's a lot of room to play with a story like this and I want to what new slant they've brought to classic themes.

  2. When they mess with greek mythology like they did with this one, and distort it, use wrong characters, and when the costumes don't even match the time period set etc etc, I lose interest...... Fools.

  3. @Extraordinarii - Costumes didn't match the time period? When did the Greek myths take place exactly? The "unfaithful" to the myths complaint is funny to me given the myths themselves are known to use with some variations, and obviously must have evolved and changed over time given that they began as relatively local oral traditions. Why is Bullfinch's version definitive?

Anyway, good review. Sometimes the gods' costumes made me think of a perfume commercial or something, but the action was pretty good.

  4. We couldn't even get through the whole thing it was so boring and artsy. So the wife and I stuck in the original Clash of the Titans and saved our movie night.

  5. Bit of an excuse for a slash and gash fest with CGI on steroids. Bit of a mish-mash of various elements of Greek mythology but the ancient Greeks were a blood-thirsty lot and I can't help thinking they'd probably approve the uber-violence of the modern rendition.

    Cheers,

  6. How do you have time to go to movies with all the great modeling you do. Can you stretch time?!

  7. I love Greek mythology, and I don't know if I want to see a re-imagining of it really.

  8. what a crappy bow. it was just basically a 50 dollar recurve bow painted black. they could have made it a lil more fancier.

  14. I like Mickey Rourke (sorry about his plastic surgery though). Hmmm, sounds like they jumbled up the mythology. The Titan were locked up by Zeus and his fellow Olympians. Theseus was more of a Athenian hero. Wonder why they have to re-write the myths sometimes, as if left as they are they're still very interesting. Glad you enjoyed it, nonetheless. Best, Dean

  23. I liked the Immortals, too. I'l probably buy it when it comes on DVD. I don't know. Yeah, all of these Greek mythology movies play hard and fast with how the stories were truly written. I loved the gore and the action. Mickey Rourke's character was cruel as hell, wasn't he?

  26. Cool. I'm kind of in a bit of an "ancients mode" at the moment, so this might be a good item to add to my watching list.

  29. Well it certainly doesn't sound like it sucks.

I read a lot of Greek and Roman mythology in 5th and 6th grades, and I just may have to see this.
