28mm Sherlock Holmes, Dr.Watson and Mina Harker from....

.......Ironclad Miniatures and a little poll!

I've always been a fan of Sherlock Holmes, I've read all the stories and seen a lot of the movie and TV adaptations over the years, my favourite among many has always been Basil Rathbone but Robert Downey JR comes very close with 2 TV Sherlock Holmes Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller doing excellent work, there have been a lot of actors who have played the fictional sleuth over the years, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Caine and even John Cleese to name but a few........

......Mina Harker is the wife of Jonathan Harker from the Dracula novel who is bitten by Dracula but ultimately saved, although in the movie The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen she is still quite a vampiric handful!

These are nice figures from Ironclad and my only gripe is there a little too tall compared to other 28mm miniatures, I've included a Copplestone figure to show scale.....

....there's a little poll on the side for fun just to ask who your favourite Holmes was out of a small list?

  1. I'm a big fan as well, and while I like Downey, I haven't been able to give him a shot yet. But I love him in Iron Man.

  2. Good job on the figures!
I'm a fan as well and I've read all the books. Downey does well in the movies and I like both the UK and the US television shows.

  5. From your list Granada TV's Brett, especially in the earlier episodes, is the closest Holmes to the original stories. Less well-known, but probably better, is the partnership of Clive Merrison and Michael Williams on BBC Radio 4 - this has been the only time that all 60 of the original stories have been dramatised with the same two actors playing the parts of Holmes and Watson, and they did an excellent job.

True Fact: I met my wife through our mutual interest in Sherlock Holmes.

  6. They look awesome indeed and voted away too at your feed

  7. Very nice Paintwork Fran!
You got my vote too... I think Rathbone is certainly the more classic guise of Holmes, but I found the recent Downey Jr movies an excellent romp and a wonderfully colourful twist on the character and behaviour of Holmes, so he gets my vote!

  8. While the two Downey films have the right look for the period, I don't like the disheveled way they have chosen to have him portraying Holmes, though I think he would do a proper Holmes quite well. Jeremy Brett will always be the perfect "classic" Holmes, but Benedict Cumberbatch has his traits down perfectly.

  9. Great job on those and an excellent choice of minis. The Mina is especially nice. The Robert Downey Jr. movies got my two youngest boys to read some Sherlock Holmes.

  10. I really like the way you painted Holmes Fran. That red vest is just perfect.

This is really hard as I like Rathbone, Downey and Cumberbatch but all for different reasons. If I'm going classic Holmes, I'm going with Rathbone. If I'm going with what might have been going on in the mind of someone this freakishly intelligent I'd go with Downey. If I'm going with how utterly unfeeling a person like this can be I'm going with Cumberbatch. I voted, but I won't tell for whom.

  11. Another vote for Jeremy Brett from me.

    Lovely figures Fran :)

  13. Fantastic work on these, Fran. I like that lady - she looks all business. Best, Dean

  14. Rathbone for me as well. Great job on the painting mate, especially Mina.

  15. Your version of Mimie Harker looks a bit like the girl I used to date in Germany, but Mimie looks less psychotic! As a surprising coincidence she was doing her PHD on Sherlock Holmes. Constanza not Mimie!

    1. I probably know more about the framework and structure of Sir Arthur Conan Doyles stories than is good for me. It is interesting to note that the basic layout of the Sherlock Holmes stories, things like, the order event occur, is still used today especially on TV detective programmes "Morse" being a noted exception.,

  17. I voted for Benedict Cumberbatch. Looks like I'm the only one so far. :(

  18. These are some of my favourite of the Ironclads range, I really like the Holmes and Watson and Madame Mina is a lovely sculpt. Your paint jobs have certainly bought them to life.

  19. Great work. There are a lot of Holmes and Watsos out there these days - on film, and in miniatures. Great paint work. My vote is for Benedict. I'm a real fan of the modern adaptations and the cerebral Holmes over Mr Downey JR's action hero

  20. Great representation of the characters, excellent paintjob.

I was always liked Jeremy Brett's version. Faithful to the spirit of the original and didn't shy away from the the darker side of his character. Brett also seemed to be slightly bonkers which helped. There was also a very good radio adaptation starring Clive Merrison which occasionally features on Radio 4extra.

    Regards,
    Matt

  21. Lovely figures : good painting job!

I honesty can't vote in the pole! I'm not a specialist of the Sherlock's movies !
I just can say that I like the recent BBC tv serie called "Sherlock", the actor is really good !

  22. Very nice work, cast my vote too.

  23. Jeremy Brett all the way. I got some of these for a diorama last year and they look very nice - I went for a much more black-and-white scheme but I like the splash of colour Dr Watson has. Very inventive, my good sir.

  24. More very nice painting! That woman in red looks excellent.

The only 2 Holmes films/TV shows are the Hound of the Baskervilles with Peter Cook and one of the ones with Christopher Lee in it. I voted for Lee but I probably haven't seen enough variations of Sherlock Holmes to vote properly!

  25. I grew up on Rathbone so he is my favourite Holmes although Christopher Plummer and James Mason as Watson in Murder By Decree come pretty close.

  26. They look wonderful and I am incredibly jealous that your poll works and mine would not!

  27. I like these figures. I love Robert Downey Junior and I'm quite keen on the "Elementary" TV series.
Can't see the poll btw :-(

  28. Wonderful paintjobs (especially on Mrs Harker). For me, Benedict "I'm Not Posh, Chaps!" Cumberbatch is the best Holmes I've seen.

  29. Great job, sherlock has always been a favorite

  30. Thats some excellent work there Fran. Nice one.

  31. Looking very nice...Mina is just wonderful!!

  32. The series with Jeremy Brett captured Sir Arthur Conan Doyle works the best. No doubt in my mind that his was the best portrayal of Sherlock Holmes on film or TV. Another fine set of figures.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love Guy Ritchie's version of Sherlock and Robert Downey is fabulous (Jude Law is quite nice, too I might add). But I also love the new Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch and Bilbo...I mean Martin Freeman :)

  34. I have a massive man-crush on Robert Downey Jr, so of course I like his (with a lot of help from Guy Riche, who I have less time for) version of Holmes. Cummerbatch is my favourite right now i think. Johnny Lee Miller is doing a fine job, on an entertaining series, but it's not Holmes.

Love the Mina Harker mini, may have to buy me one of them!

  35. Jeremy Brett and no other! Downey Jr ruined the character and showed disrespect towards him! You need refined class, wit and naughty charms for the role.

  36. It is been a while since I read any of the original stories. I don't recall that Doyle set any of them in the U.S. West (to match your other period figurines), but Mark Twain did a satire stories Called the Double Barrel Detective. I think I may have read it when I was young enough to not realize it was satire.

  37. Cracking work Francis, Mina is particularly fearsome! I have to confess that the new BBC reworking of Sherlock has caught my imagination - great fun.

  38. Great work on these figures mate.

  39. The figures look good and the size difference doesn't seem too bad. Mina is just a big girl. My favorite Holmes is Basil Rathbone, my parnets used to tease me they were going to change my name to Basil, or Nigel, when I was a kid. I also enjoyed the Downey movies.

  40. Very nice, Fran. The figures from Ironclad are really nice too.

  41. Nice figures turdface! I voted for Brett, he's the one I remember seeing the most!

  42. Great paint jobs on them Fran and I have to say that they do very nice figures.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Excellent stuff. Not seen these figures before.

Love RDjr but it's got to be Brett for me!

  44. Those look great Francis. I like seeing you do 28mm from time to time. You do excellent work. As for my vote, Rathbone all the way. When someone mentions Sherlock Holmes he's the first picture that pops into my mind.

  45. hi francis! long time no see! i like the new look of your blog :)

now then, it shames me to say it, but i've neither watched nor read any sherlock holmes, ever. in fact, my first even vague encounter with the character was a couple of weeks ago, in a book called "Oscar Wilde and The Vatican Murders", in which oscar wilde (well, obviously) and sir arthur conan doyle bustle about europe solving crimes together. so at least i now know who sherlock holmes is...

as for the miniatures, i'm very impressed with the rack on that one in the dress, mina harker...they make a lovely shelf right under her chin. i simply MUST know where she got that corset.

  46. I tend to divide Sherlock Holmes movies/TV/video into those placed in their original 19th century foggy London settings, and adaptations into more modern times. On the whole I much preferred the former, but I have to say I enjoyed very much Benedict Cumberpatch in the role, and what I've seen of the Jonny Lee Miller/Lucy Liu partnership looks pretty good as well (unfortunately it's clashing with the latest Big Bang Theory season, and nothing will displace that!).

I don't much like the Robert Downey Junior movie. Plenty of action and the settings are great, but two things I can't get past. First, it's too camp. I don't really 'get' camp. The definitive 'camp' TV series was 'The Avengers' with Patrick MacNee and Diana Rigg. That was so good (though dated now) that camp just doesn't work anymore for mine. The other is that the RDJ Holmes just isn't 'Holmes', foe all that Jude Law make a convincing Dr Watson.

But it might be interesting to consider sleuths in general in literature, radio and the visual media. Numero Uno in my book is good ol' Sam Vimes.

  48. Love the recent BBC series', but it has to be Jeremy Brett for me. Nicely painted models too!

  49. Very excellent painting Fran

  50. Beautiful work on Holmes and Watson, Fran!

It's Rathbone & Cumberbatch for our household (Downey, while always entertaining to watch, seems too over-the-top for the character we know and love. Still great fun though!)
