It is interesting to note that the basic layout of the Sherlock Holmes stories, things like, the order event occur, is still used today especially on TV detective programmes "Morse" being a noted exception., Clinthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02351729764098750618noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1581073256021644369.post-64853662231991693452013-05-11T03:22:32.416+01:002013-05-11T03:22:32.416+01:00I tend to divide Sherlock Holmes movies/TV/video i...I tend to divide Sherlock Holmes movies/TV/video into those placed in their original 19th century foggy London settings, and adaptations into more modern times. On the whole I much preferred the former, but I have to say I enjoyed very much Benedict Cumberpatch in the role, and what I've seen of the Jonny Lee Miller/Lucy Liu partnership looks pretty good as well (unfortunately it's clashing with the latest Big Bang Theory season, and nothing will displace that!).

I don't much like the Robert Downey Junior movie. Plenty of action and the settings are great, but two things I can't get past. First, it's too camp. I don't really 'get' camp. The definitive 'camp' TV series was 'The Avengers' with Patrick MacNee and Diana Rigg. That was so good (though dated now) that camp just doesn't work anymore for mine. The other is that the RDJ Holmes just isn't 'Holmes', foe all that Jude Law make a convincing Dr Watson.

But it might be interesting to consider sleuths in general in literature, radio and the visual media. Numero Uno in my book is good ol' Sam Vimes.
