In the basic starter box set you receive 3 ships, Federation, Klingon and Romulan as pictured below which to me should be the highlight of the box but they're not, they feel a little plasticy (which is what they are made of obviously and not as well painted in my opinion as the X-Wing models) but they are Star Trek models and will be fine for the game (I'm probably being too fussy).........
There are far more races to choose from according to the book including (not all at once and probably in phases like X-Wing), Cardassian, Borg, Ferengi etc...you can customize your ships with upgrades and famous names from Star Trek, the Federation and the Klingons are my favourites and with my birthday coming up I will add a ship or two and give the game a go but the Warbird has really annoyed me.........and I think the scale will be an issue for some too!
Pictures could have been better but Picassa has lost it's edit button!
Some pictures of the starter pack ships.......
The Warbird but the fly in the ointment........
.....is this fecking mold line, my friend has contacted Wayland Games and they have requested a picture (could be a one off hopefully)......
I have included an X-Wing to give an idea of the comparison between the games and size and scale.........
Some of the items included, you get 5 attack and 5 defence dice which is 2 more than X-Wing.......
Some character cards, familiar faces for all the races...........
The ship cards are very similar but with higher attack stats........
Cloaking is included and quite interesting rule and an essential one too, also you have shields that can be after being disabled can then be turned back on in the next turn but not if they were damaged and then will remain so for the rest of the game......
Other small differences are that the range for movement is up to 6 and that you can back up your ship in the rules (go backwards basically).........
What you get in the box........
.....and then there's this..........
First impressions are sort of fair but I'm looking forward to sorting a game out and seeing what happens, will it outdo X-Wing?.........shields up!
It does look interesting Fran!
ReplyDeleteChristopher
That's what's keeping me in the project mate.
DeleteMmmm I dont know about the game mechanics.. haven't played.. but to have a scenario that uses that space station... mmmm yup.. something I can get behind! Great article mate! And mailing address might be required here then ;)
ReplyDeleteNot a problem sir.....
DeleteOh, uhm.... I am a bit shocked. The Ships look like they are toys from a gumball machine! The rest of the box looks much better.
ReplyDeleteYou just have to get by the ships, maybe they're meant to be retro?
DeleteProbably they are - and even if not: things tend to look better once they are on the table.
Delete:-)
....and the two foot rule is in effect then!
DeleteFran, now that is an awesome birthday present! I am envious.
ReplyDeleteThe Klingon ship exactly matches a Christmas ornament I have. Wonder if they were all made from the same mold?
Man, I want my own Deep Space Nine station now...
Deep Space Nine is the real beauty!
DeleteAs a fan of Star Trek it's pretty cool to see how they're pretty true to the series.
ReplyDeleteThey are retro enough Mark.
DeleteThat is so cool. The Mrs. and I are both big Star Trek fans. I wonder if I'd be able to get her into a game with this... hmm.....
ReplyDeleteThis could be the thing Chris!
DeletePretty cool prezzie Fran!
ReplyDeleteNow and again I get spoiled.
DeleteDeep Space Nine is really snazzy.
ReplyDeleteLimited edition I hear though.
DeleteNice present! Looks like it will be pretty cool to play. I think however I prefer the x-wing concept of smaller fighter pilots but I am sure this will be just as fun. After all Star Trek is better than Star Wars, in my opinion. Then again I love ol' Han Solo. Looking forward to hearing how it plays.
ReplyDeleteI like X-Wing as it's dog fighting where this is capital ships.....fighting.
DeleteI think there is a cart carrying a musical ensemble that is being leaped upon!
ReplyDeleteI am not a Trek fan so for me this is of very limited interest. Which means that my sister will probably buy it for me for Christmas thinking she's being nice and getting me a really good pressie!
That aside, I am making some more fudge next week, if you would like some for your birthday.......
Yes please and no strings anywhere?
DeleteNo strings
DeleteI will email you to get the postal address. Expect it about Thursday!
DeleteNice one sir!
DeleteGreat Prezzy, I'm jealous as I rarely get anything cool for my birthdays; I suppose it pays to advertise your birthday well in advance.
ReplyDeleteRay gave me the idea!
DeleteThey could do with a little of that I believe!
ReplyDeleteHappy early birthday.
ReplyDeleteLooks like they need a little paint...
Cool present nonetheless!
That's the thing, you buy pre-painted and it needs painting?
DeleteLucky devil!
ReplyDeleteWhy thank you Paul.
DeleteHappy Early Birthday. I'd send you some chocolate but we're fresh out. Tim says I ate it all. But I remember it differently.
ReplyDeletePS: Cool Star Trek stuff.
I believe you Whisk!
Delete:-)
DeleteNice review, wonder how it compares to SW in ££££
ReplyDeleteIan
My mate got it for £26.99 I believe and the individual ships are around the £11.00 mark.
DeleteOh hell, I saw a large game of this played at GenCon and didn't realize what system until just now. This game had 10-12 ships per side and was moving along really well.
ReplyDeleteIt's like my wife says, "Star Wars is a great story, Star Trek is the future."
I like the wife's statement....true as well.
Deletesuch a thrill for Star Trek fans, Fran!
ReplyDeleteThey know there audience market.
DeleteVery interesting spaceship shapes, and great looking playcards...welcome to the 45...
ReplyDeleteAll the best,
Phil.
Not a fan of the Trek?
DeleteWow, they went full out and captured a ton of details
ReplyDeleteThey did put a lot of work in to it!
DeleteThose don't look too bad but I see what you mean. I don't think you're being too fussy. First thing I asked myself before I even saw the caption below it in that one pic was holy crap, is that a mold line or is it supposed to be like that?
ReplyDeleteI don't think so unless someone tells me otherwise.
DeleteVery nice pressie Fran. I have looked at this numerous times but just cant shift the niggling that it does not look as detailed or as polished as the X-Wing game. Shame as im a huge Trek fan but the Star Wars game has the better appeal with being fighters.
ReplyDeleteThat's the difference between them isn't it, fighters versus cruisers!
DeleteThe miniatures look very disappointing but I guess for just a game now and then they will do
ReplyDeletePeace James
Very true James.
DeleteThanks for the first impression coverage. Perhaps a quick drybrush/wash could bring out more details on those ships? Definitely can't get worse TBH. Not yet taken by the game components, although I'm a big Trek fan.
ReplyDeleteCheers, Tilman
mountainsoflead.com
You're right but you don't have to with the X-Wing miniatures.
DeleteA while back.... (mid-1990's) I had grown tired of always playing Axis and Allies" as a "war-game" So using the micro machines Star Trek Ships like those pictured... that was a cool"ship-to-ship" combat game... dice rolls... Once your shields were damaged enough...All "hits" get a "systems damage" roll as well... It was very detailed and took a while to play ... People that we knew really liked it as well
ReplyDeleteThat sounded good Dr!
DeleteCaptain Picassa: 'Make it so'. My first Star Trek joke and probably my last.
ReplyDeleteIt should be!
DeleteOooooooo those are so fun!! A friend of mine has a similar game, but it's Star Wars. The game looked complicated tho...
ReplyDeleteVery similar Mich!
DeleteThe General's Star Fleet is now being revealed to the citizens of Franonia and Angria. We all feel safer now!
ReplyDeleteNot a bad idea Field Marshall.
DeleteNice gift! I saw this being played on a table next to me over the weekend. Looking forward to hearing what you think of the game after an AAR.
ReplyDeleteThanks Monty.
DeleteThe guys at my old club in Glasgow are raving about this game. It's like X-Wing all over again.
ReplyDeleteYou can always trust the Scottish boys!
DeleteOh no!! Another temptatiom doen the road!!
ReplyDeleteSorry mate.
DeleteI would paint the buggers as that paint job would drive me bat shit crazy. But the Space Station is so cool, the Hubby would love that.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you remembered that my birthday is on the 11th and I'm equally certain that you already have my gift in the post so as to arrive on time for my special day:)
Send me your address cailin.....again!
DeleteNo silly, you don't have to send me anything. Making you feel guilty for forgetting was a present to meself:)
DeleteYes dear!
DeleteI will be interested to hear your final thoughts Fran!
ReplyDeleteIt is strange... even though I have always been a far bigger fan of Star Trek than of Star Wars, this one has not appealed to me so far, while X-Wing has. Not sure why, but I guess it is due to this first release being based on the rather peaceful TNG, instead of the more warlike setting of DS9. So space combat in this setting seems somewhat wrong to me. I think I also hold the fear that it might just be a rehash of the X-Wing rules.
Oh and I I guess this is the nerd in me coming out, but "IRL" the Romulan Warbird should be roughly twice as large as a Galaxy Class starship.
I did not know that.....DS9 and the Jem'hadar will be something to look forward to!
DeleteSee, now Jem,Hadar could sway me to play!
DeleteI kinda wish I had more Star Trek knowledge so I could benefit from stuff like this
ReplyDeleteIt'll come mate.
DeleteThe moldline does indeed suck. Perhaps go buy the diecast ships that have just come out and use them instead :D
ReplyDeleteIt's an idea but I'm terrible lazy:D
DeleteI was looking at both these ranges in Orc's Nest in London today. The finish on the Star Wars ships is much, much better. As to the scale they had an original Enterprise (and several other extra ships)which was tiny compared with the NCC 1701D here, so they are making some attempt at scale but obviously not consistently.
ReplyDeleteIt's a little blip but the quality is the main problem.
DeleteToys ships, they look ...
ReplyDeleteand my birthday is in less than a month ....
You're probably a lot younger than me too!
Deletenot sure! I'm young in the hobby and sometimes in my mind but that's all!
DeleteI'm coming up to 45 but mentally 18!
DeleteI'm 3 years old in the Hobby, 98 in the Hobbit life, 10 to 20 in my head, sometimes feeling like 75 or 30 in my body, , and will be 56 years old in real life!
DeleteHow old is the Captain ?
Hhmm?
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. The game has me interested! I'll have to check it out.
ReplyDeleteGlad to help Cory!
DeleteHi Fran,
ReplyDeletea nice present.
And an interesting review from you. Thanks a lot.
Since I started X-Wing recently I'll not enter the Starfleet...
Cheers
Stefan
Makes sense Stefan and thanks.
DeleteVery cool indeed.
ReplyDeleteThanks sir.
DeleteIt looks really interesting game wise and tge toys look no bad to. The spacestation looks awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteIt does, doesn't it!
DeleteI'm still on the fence about the models, but the game itself looks like it will be difficult to resist.
ReplyDeleteCome to the Trekkie side Sean!
DeleteI saw some of these yesterday in the flesh and they were next to some X-Wing and the X-Wing stuff look much better. However its Star Trek and that wins for me. I have a black wash over them would make them look better
ReplyDeleteThat could help.
DeleteI want that space station.
ReplyDeleteMe too.
DeleteIt sounds (and looks) fine; interesting game option. And the space station is GREAT!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Juan.
