In the 19th century, a warrior named Yang (Jang Dong-gun) is ordered to kill the last member of an enemy clan--a baby. He refuses the mission and flees with the child to a dilapidated town in the American West. Despite his attempts, his enemies close in on him and he must fight to protect the child and his newfound comrades: Ron (Geoffrey Rush), the town drunk, and Lynne (Kate Bosworth), both of whom have a tragic past.
Now that's just a summary but bears no real idea to what goes on in this movie, the action which is very stylised and when it comes is amazing, over the top and downright crazy between the characters of the circus dwellers and performers (bearded lady, strongman, clown etc....) staying in the town, the town in question is a shithole and into this steps Yang (amazing swordplay but mentally damaged after years of killing) and the child and for a brief moment brings calm and beauty to the town but between the ninjas and the evil cowboy horde (like the guys in the dusters in Pale Rider but dirtier and lots, lots more) led by a disfigured madman (Danny Huston as a colonel) and a bodycount in the low 3 figures. There are a lot of flashbacks dealing with most of the main characters pasts and an ending which is good enough and leaves itself open for a sequel which will never be made. The amount of gaming ideas this movie presents is good with the obvious ninjas vs cowboys vs clowns???.The movie is worth a watch but is not going to linger in your mind as a classic.
I have to admit I kind of skipped through the movie for the action scenes which were pretty awesome. I wasn't too interested in seeing Kate "learn the Eastern ways."
ReplyDeleteI think that is an overplayed theme.
Danny Huston is pretty bad-ass in this though.
I will have to check that movie out.
ReplyDeleteNinjas, cowboys and clowns. Oh my.
ReplyDeleteI didn't care for it much
ReplyDeleteLooks ok...I love clowns!!:-D
ReplyDeletehas anyone seen Sucker Punch yet????

Nice review there, i was thinking that it had more potential but i trust your judgement still im gonna see it.
ReplyDeleteIf it wasn't you telling me, or it was April 1st, I'd say 'surely not!' Too much for one film! But I'm impressed with the central premise, saving the child, and the idea of the calm coming over the town. As ever, it's now in mind and I'll likely notice it all the quicker for that reason.
ReplyDeletewhat a combo of characters!
ReplyDeleteYeah I liked lil slow in parts but good.
ReplyDeletesounds awesome
ReplyDeletesound interesting, gonna check it out
ReplyDeleteso much crap going on in that trailer
ReplyDeleteI am a sucker for any kind of Western, and Geoffrey Rush is one of my favorite character actors. I think I am going to look into this one even if it's for just some simple 90 min. amusement.
ReplyDeletei'ma watch to see the incredible Geoffrey Rush. :D
ReplyDeleteProbably watch it just for the action then
ReplyDeleteI think I would watch this movie for the characters! I love movies with character development!

ReplyDeleteSounds like I may enjoy this one night.
ReplyDeleteNinjas vs cowboys vs clowns? eh, I don't know what to say :D
ReplyDeleteLooks like a decent enough weekend time waster.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds plausible enough. As long as it's all in self-defense, it's justified.
ReplyDeleteThank you and I check it out when it comes on the film channels.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Christopher
