Angry Lurker Honest Movie Review 49: THOR 2011 (3 STARS)

The warrior Thor (Hemsworth) is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard by his father Odin (Hopkins) for his arrogance and sent to Earth to live among humans. Falling in love with scientist Jane Foster (Portman) teaches Thor much-needed lessons, and his new-found strength comes into play as a villain from his homeland sends dark forces toward Earth.

When I was a big comic fan I never read Thor or any superhero that was too powerful like Superman or too goody two shoes like Spiderman or Dare Devil, I'm more of a Punisher, Batman and Wolverine fan (either little superpower or none). So I approached Thor with caution but it's not a bad movie once Thor get's over himself, the action is good especially at the beginning with the frost giants (good bad guys and well lead).

You get bits and pieces mentioned about other heroes like Bruce Banner (The Hulk), Tony Stark (Iron Man) and a look at Hawkeye (Avengers) and more S.H.I.E.L.D shenanigans, the love story isn't too soppy, Rene Russo is hardly used (a shame), Loki is a sneaky shite (even I knew this), Hopkins does a good Hopkins as Odin. As I said I didn't know much about some of the other characters among his Asgard posse but all in all worth a watch.

  1. Indeed. Thanks for the review. I have lots of superhero films to catch up on.

  2. I haven't seen it yet, and may not for a while, but I get the feeling I'll like it more than most, for the essential weirdness of it all.

I love the poster line too "THE" "GOD" "OF" "THUNDER". It's almost 'Titans Will Clash', for Clash of the Titans of course...

  3. I liked it, though I felt like the Marvel movie formula was starting to wear a litle thin. Captain America revived my flagging interest, though.

  5. We happen to have similar taste in comic heroes (little superpower or none). I watch most superhero movies anyway (regardless of power level), and intended to watch this one, so I'm glad to see it's good enough that you gave it three stars.

  6. I'd class this as one of the better superhero movies to be released this year. Not bad at all!

  8. Huh, thanks for the heads up. I never liked Thor in the comics, or that guy that was like Thor but had the horse head(???) Anyway, I was leery of this, but I may have to check it out.

  9. I did enjoy the movie. I was afraid that too much use of CGI would make it look cheap (i.e. the new Conan) but in the end it work really well with the aesthetics of the movie. Performances weren't too shabby either.

  12. Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Kenneth Branagh great as expected. The thing that ruin the film for me was that horrid wench Portman.

  15. I loved Thor; I thought that Thor and Captain America were both a great watch within context of the unfolding Marvel cinema-verse.

  16. Since I live way way way far away from any western civilization, I have yet to read a single Marvel comic, or any comic for that matter.

Would love to see Thor or atleast the read the comic.

  18. I really didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I thought there wasn't enough action and Natalie Portman was completely miscast. Her chemistry with Chris Hemsworth was awful...and that's hard b/c that man would have chemistry with a rock. I gave it 3 stars as well b/c it was a very good looking film and overall a decent comic book flick.

  26. It looked like they were having a two for one sale on chrome plating in Asgard. It reminded me of a not so loved movie from my past Excalibur. Who knew mythical beings were recycling American Muscle car bumpers as armor. To quote my Guru and spiritual guide Weebl "Great Greasy Poop! I'm Blind!" Ok I am not going to hate, at least it was marginally better than Dolph Lungren as He-Man. I feel a bit sorry for Anthony Hopkins, he has done so many challenging roles and deep charactizarions to have fallen to comic book movies. This is the second time I have felt this way, Beowolfe. was a waste of his talents.
