Angry Movie Lurker Honest Review 55: Captain America 2011 (3 STARS)

It is 1942, America has entered World War II, and sickly but determined Steve Rogers is frustrated at being rejected yet again for military service. Everything changes when Dr. Erksine recruits him for the secret Project Rebirth. Proving his extraordinary courage, wits and conscience, Rogers undergoes the experiment and his weak body is suddenly enhanced into the maximum human potential. When Dr. Erksine is then immediately assassinated by an agent of Nazi Germany's head of its secret HYDRA research department, Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull, Rogers is left as a unique man who is initially misused as a propaganda mascot. However, when his comrades need him, Rogers goes on a successful adventure that truly makes him Captain America and his war against Schmidt begins.

This appealed to me only through it's WW2 element and it's option for gaming and a bit of What If? thrown in but the lead actor (Chris Evans) is not bad as the Captain and plays the role well and Hugo Weaving plays the Red Skull with complete enthusiasm. There are legions of German Hydra troops, Hydra equipment (lovely stuff and cool uniforms) and eye candy, humour and plots to take over the world. The action is good, some cringing crap when he's a mascot for war bonds but the love interest Hayley Atwell is very good and quite beautiful, Tommy Lee Jones is a bit miscast but still likeable because he's who he is, it slows in a few places but overall worth a watch especially for the WW2 element to the movie and The Avengers element especially at the end.

...but you know me I was rooting for the bad guy at times.

  2. :) I like anyhow no films from 2000, but although I, actually, the Marvel superheroes already as a child might be in the foreground, I must confess, that to me in this filming as well as in other of his kind simply the CGI effects too much! But films are anyhow a taste thing! ;)

  6. I saw this at the cinema when it was first released and thoroughly enjoyed it. My only (minor) criticism is that I'd liked to have seen more of Hayley Atwell - what a babe!

  10. I liked it. I wish Hydra and the Red Skull had seemed more pulp-Nazi that G.I. Joe's Cobra in their design aspects.

  14. Just saw this movie myself. Like the critics said, there's no surprises, but all around the movie is extremely well done.

Also, unlike previous tries, 95% of this movie is during WWII as opposed to only the first 15 minutes of the film, which is a huge plus!

  15. I had almost forgotten about this movie, because it wasn't something I was dying to see at the theater when it first came out. However, I do really want to see this on DVD. Great review, my friend!

  16. I'm a fan of the artwork in Marvel comic books. Personally I think they raised cartooning to the level of an artform. And the comic came out during WWII as well, nice bit of history in the war dept and the tooning industry working together. Have you seen any of the looney toons war propoganda toons? They're fabulous. I'm seeing this movie.

  17. I wanted to see more from Mr. Smith. Thought they should have done more with that. And overall, I thought the movie was just fair. Thought the script could have been better. That said, I'll see the next one, but have zero wish to see this one again.

    Meanwhile, staycation continues ...

  18. I like superheroes that aren't overly powerful, it gives a chance for more story and strategy. I also really like how they portrayed Red Skull, great review.

  23. I was pleasantly surprised at this movie, actually. And come to think of it, it WOULD make for some interesting gaming sessions...US Troops vs. German Hydra troops, with each side having their respective juggernaut soldier (Captain America and Red Skull, of course, not Juggernaut :P )

  24. Two things that were completely awesome with that movie:

    1) The flying wing

    2) That red dress

On second thought maybe I should say there are four things completely awesome with that movie...

  27. I liked this one up to the midpoint. I was grinning like a fool at how old school adventure movie it was when Rogers was still a wimp and all the stuff happening. After the POW camp however something happened and the movie just fell flat for me :-/

  28. Captain America really was brought about to inspire patriotism and such, so I guess it's only fair it made it into the movie. I've never really gotten into CA, but I might still watch this, and give him a shot. I could never really get over the whole him being made simply to inspire patriotism, but hey we Brits did it a lot too I think.
