Angry Lurker Honest Movie Review 65: Underworld 4 (3 STARS).

I saw Underworld: Awakening  in 3D (my first 3D movie experience), the glasses were a bit of a pain but I think only as I wear glasses as well and I believe that only parts of the movie were in 3D, some scenes especially explosions were quite good but after a while the effect was less appealing, I would quite happily watch this in 2D and not really bothered about seeing another 3D movie .........

This movie is set 12 years after the last movie (Evolution), the humans declared war on both the Lycans and Vampires and now both races are pale shadows of their former selves and both are on the verge of extinction but sinister plans are under way, Selena and her hybrid daughter with Michael (the original actor is not in the movie and the character has a very brief appearance, this is quite a loss to the movie?). There is a brief flashback at the beginning to clarify previous events!

Anyway herself and her young daughter who she was unaware of escape from their prison/lab facility with assistance and are pursued by mangy lycans, humans, vampires, not so mangy lycans and Stephen Rea having a great time as a bad guy (technically), the movie is rated 18 and it shows with a lot more gore and blood, it's only 88 mins long but it rarely lets up with the action (good and bad), the budget was more than the last movie but doesn't show but Selena (Kate) is still as great as ever and as the last death dealer goes through the opposition like a dose of ducolax. The story is based around a Lycan plot to re-emerge back into the world but in an improved way.......

It's over the top, a little ridiculous but well worth the watch for Selene still at her best and kicking ass in her still well fitting costume.....

  2. i`m with you on the 3d thing,, i`ve only seen one ( thor 3d ) and felt a little cheated. only a small % of the film was 3d. i found it too distracting,,,a similar thing happens when i see kate in a film.

  3. I'm gonna get it when it comes out on Blu-ray 3D.
Big fan of The Underworld Movies.
I guess I'm one of those that hasn't had a issue with the 3d glasses yet. Vampire Girl Kate is Hot!

  4. Yeah 3d is crap, they should take it and shove it. Just a way for them to raise ticket prices. Haven't watched this one yet, but prob will as I've seen the others, sounds like an okay watch too.

  5. I absolute adore Selene and the Underworld films. I thought this was a most enjoyable romp. A big thumbs up from me, although I do agree that the 3D effects didn't add much to the film.

  6. 3d movies have become a bit of a con really. Unless they're actually shot in 3d (like Avatar which was amazing in 3d) it's not really worth the effort or the extra money – Alice in Wonderland and the last of the Harry Potter films were a waste of 3d.

Fingers crossed George has made a decent go of Star Wars in 3d – but I won't hold my breath.

  17. I can't read the review because I might see the movie. But ... I LOVED the video. Tim and I watched it and it was great fun to see you guys.

And yeppers. Toothpaste for 50 cents. And last week, deodorant for only 42 cents.

    I love it!

  19. Yeah 3D was (as with most films) unneccessary here.

  20. Never seen any of the Underworld moves, might be worth it just for Kate Beckinsale though.

  21. eh... I'm already kinda over the whole underworld series...

  22. The only movie worth watching in 3D is Avatar.

  23. I'm sure I'll get around to watching this because Kate is so damn fine. I think I'm in the minority but I don't mind the Underworld movies. They're not bad.

  24. Thank you for the report, Fran. I have been always a fan of this series (and Selene...) so I´m going to see this movie, in 2D.

And, after that, to paint my Selene model in 28mm!!!

  26. Good review but I have zero interest in an Underworld movie.

  27. I've had way too many unreliable sources (read: friends) tell me that this was an amazing movie and that I should watch it in 3d. I'm really glad you shot this down to where I expect it to be.

  28. I'm only interested in 3d when I will be able to touch and feel it. Until then, I'll just read reviews such as yours to satisfy my curiosity on these movies. Good review.

  29. I'd watch Kate Beckinsale in anything! Also, not a huge fan of 3D myself.

  30. 3D can be good- I liked it in Avatar, but I find it does distract me- I get pulled out of the experience some when I start thinking 'this looks so cool in 3D' or worse, when it doesn't and I just think 'I wish I could take these uncomfortable glasses off'. Well Kate is worth an extra star all by herself in her leather sexy vampire outfit!

  31. How is it you always wind up convincing me.

  32. I just woke up from the world's longest lie in. A day off and I slept it away. Don't get old Angry, because this is what happens to you.

  33. I saw a movie called prestige, great movie it got like 75% or something on rotten tomatoes which is pretty good

  34. I'm with you on the whole 3D hullaballoo. I wish filmmakers these days would put the extra effort into producing a higher quality 2D movie instead of screwing around trying to poke your eyes out with the leading lady's tits. Actually, scratch that.

  35. I really liked this movie. I think the actor, Scot speedman, played Michael in the previous first two movies. Though Selena's lover and vampire/Lycan hybrid are missing, pretty much altogether from the movie, I still enjoyed the action and seeing Kate back in her catsuit. She still kicks ass. I bet there will be a sequel the way it ended. At least I hope so. I saw this movie in 2D. I haven't seen a 3D movie in awhile. The glasses are kinda bothersome and can give you a headache at times. In any case, the movie gets a B grade from me. I paid the matinee price. Entertaining way to spend an afternoon. Great review, dude. I like your reviews better than the so-called professional movie critics. Most of them are pretentious an full of shit.
