A movie based on a true story about a trio of brothers who sold moonshine in Franklin County, Virginia and their battle against the corrupt authorities during the prohibition period of the United States.
Watched this as part of a double bill of movies I saw on the same day, I sometimes do this when I have a spare day and there's two movies worth seeing! Around the late 20's the Bondurant brothers run moonshine quite successfully during the prohibition period and things are running fine until a corrupt politician wants a share and sends a psychotic special deputy (Guy Pearce playing psycho very well), what follows is a steady rise in intimidation and violence from both sides that heads for a dramatic conclusion and showdown.
Tom Hardy is excellent as Forrest Bondurant, Shia LaBeouf is the young brother with dreams to rival Capone, Gary Oldman has a few brief appearances as a big time villain, in fact all the performances are good, the pace of the movie is quite slow at times and then you're hit with a moment of violence and the pace slows again, not as good as I thought it would be but well worth a watch!
Taking some annual leave and may not be around as much for a week or so!
A good cast! Nice to see an Aussie in there (Guy Pearce) and I've always liked Gary Oldman. He grew up in New Cross, where I lived in London, about over street over from my share house!
ReplyDeleteAlmost went to see this in the theater. Will catch on NetFlix.
ReplyDeleteHmm...moonshiners and revenuers, huh.
ReplyDeleteI like Hardy, he's a good actor and I find this period of American history really fun. I've seen the trailer for this and would give it a go.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your time of Fran and get some painting done!
Never never heard about this movie. Will include in list. Enjoy your vacation
ReplyDeleteYep...I wanted to see this. Sounded like a great story to me. Now I want to see it even more. Love the cast...all except for Shia LaBeouf - he makes my head hurt.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU! I can't figure out why they keep casting him in movies!
DeleteI'm gonna try to drag the mrs to see this on Friday!!!
ReplyDeleteMight see this... meanwhile, have a good holiday!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like something I might enjoy but I'm not sure how well Shia will do. I think this is probably a serious role and I've never seen him doing anything serious. I'll miss ya while you're gone man, enjoy your break.
ReplyDeleteCheers lar, nice report. As you know it's a favourite period of mine. I'll look forward to seeing it.
ReplyDeleteSounds good mate
ReplyDeleteSure it will be a watch one day, even though I hate that Shia idiot.
ReplyDeletenot mu cup of tea, Lurk, but I do like Pearce and Hardy.

I have to admit I was expecting this to be a cracking movie, perhaps I'll wait for the DVD. Enjoy the rest my good man.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your holidays Frank
ReplyDeleteIm a fan of everyone in the cast (save for that dork from Transformers) yet I somehow can't drag myself to see this =/
ReplyDeleteNetflix might change my mind. one day.
I really enjoyed this 1, A really solid cast and story.
ReplyDeleteToo bad, this isn't shown in Ph.
ReplyDeleteWell boil my rabbit... it didn't look that great in the previews...
ReplyDeleteNot too excited for it but I'm sure it's watchable. Enjoy your leave!
ReplyDeleteReally like these kind of films so I'll for sure watch it!
ReplyDeleteChristopher
I'll wait for this one to come out on DVD too, especially since you said it dragged a bit. Hope you have a fun vacation, Lurk!
ReplyDeleteI don't think that i will like it
ReplyDeleteyeah, i want to check this out. looks aite. have a fun vacay
ReplyDeleteI saw this at a double feature, too, and like you said, a bit slow, had its moments, good but not as good as I was expecting.
ReplyDeleteIt's refreshing to have the official corruption play a part in the story. No doubt something comparable is happening across town from us right now, with those deputies outside the strip club for example. In the old days they'd never have that as a theme in a movie.
ReplyDeleteGood to see you back sir!
DeleteThis is the first I've heard of this movie. Sounds pretty good!
ReplyDeleteMy great grandfather used to make moonshine in the woods behind the farmhouse. My grandpa told me about a raid where the police tried to bribe him with candy to tell them where his dad had the operation. He didn't and the cops never found it.
Ehhh... I think I'll go watch Looper instead. Also, what's with all the Bloggers disappearing suddenly?
ReplyDeleteA lot have stopped posting recently, it's a growing trend I think!
DeleteI also think about this time to time..
DeleteI love this time in american history. I will have to give this movie a look.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your time off!
Okay, I will watch it.
