Star Trek : Attack Wing Miniatures game, first impressions........

An early birthday present from a good mate (no not Ray!) dropped in my lap the other day, my birthday is actually on the 23rd of this month (address can be supplied for any other early birthday presents:D), I knew little of the game other than it seems to be based on the Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game which I have played and actually like but my mate has nearly everything so this is my fix.........

In the basic starter box set you receive 3 ships, Federation, Klingon and Romulan as pictured below which to me should be the highlight of the box but they're not, they feel a little plasticy (which is what they are made of obviously and not as well painted in my opinion as the X-Wing models) but they are Star Trek models and will be fine for the game (I'm probably being too fussy).........

There are far more races to choose from according to the book including (not all at once and probably in phases like X-Wing), Cardassian, Borg, Ferengi etc...you can customize your ships with upgrades and famous names from Star Trek, the Federation and the Klingons are my favourites and with my birthday coming up I will add a ship or two and give the game a go but the Warbird has really annoyed me.........and I think the scale will be an issue for some too!

Pictures could have been better but Picassa has lost it's edit button!

Some pictures of the starter pack ships.......

The Warbird but the fly in the ointment........

.....is this fecking mold line, my friend has contacted Wayland Games and they have requested a picture (could be a one off hopefully)......

I have included an X-Wing to give an idea of the comparison between the games and size and scale.........

Some of the items included, you get 5 attack and 5 defence dice which is 2 more than X-Wing.......

Some character cards, familiar faces for all the races...........

The ship cards are very similar but with higher attack stats........

Cloaking is included and quite interesting rule and an essential one too, also you have shields that can be after being disabled can then be turned back on in the next turn but not if they were damaged and then will remain so for the rest of the game......

Other small differences are that the range for movement is up to 6 and that you can back up your ship in the rules (go backwards basically).........

What you get in the box........

.....and then there's this..........

First impressions are sort of fair but I'm looking forward to sorting a game out and seeing what happens, will it outdo X-Wing?.........shields up!

  3. Oh, uhm.... I am a bit shocked. The Ships look like they are toys from a gumball machine! The rest of the box looks much better.

    1. You just have to get by the ships, maybe they're meant to be retro?

    2. Probably they are - and even if not: things tend to look better once they are on the table.

    3. ....and the two foot rule is in effect then!

  4. Fran, now that is an awesome birthday present! I am envious.
The Klingon ship exactly matches a Christmas ornament I have. Wonder if they were all made from the same mold?
Man, I want my own Deep Space Nine station now...

  5. As a fan of Star Trek it's pretty cool to see how they're pretty true to the series.

  6. That is so cool. The Mrs. and I are both big Star Trek fans. I wonder if I'd be able to get her into a game with this... hmm.....

  7. Deep Space Nine is really snazzy.

  8. Nice present! Looks like it will be pretty cool to play. I think however I prefer the x-wing concept of smaller fighter pilots but I am sure this will be just as fun. After all Star Trek is better than Star Wars, in my opinion. Then again I love ol' Han Solo. Looking forward to hearing how it plays.

    1. I like X-Wing as it's dog fighting where this is capital ships.....fighting.

  9. I think there is a cart carrying a musical ensemble that is being leaped upon!

I am not a Trek fan so for me this is of very limited interest. Which means that my sister will probably buy it for me for Christmas thinking she's being nice and getting me a really good pressie!

That aside, I am making some more fudge next week, if you would like some for your birthday.......

  10. Great Prezzy, I'm jealous as I rarely get anything cool for my birthdays; I suppose it pays to advertise your birthday well in advance.

  11. They could do with a little of that I believe!

  12. Happy early birthday.

Looks like they need a little paint...

    Cool present nonetheless!

  13. Happy Early Birthday. I'd send you some chocolate but we're fresh out. Tim says I ate it all. But I remember it differently.

    PS: Cool Star Trek stuff.

  15. Oh hell, I saw a large game of this played at GenCon and didn't realize what system until just now. This game had 10-12 ships per side and was moving along really well.
It's like my wife says, "Star Wars is a great story, Star Trek is the future."

  19. Those don't look too bad but I see what you mean. I don't think you're being too fussy. First thing I asked myself before I even saw the caption below it in that one pic was holy crap, is that a mold line or is it supposed to be like that?

  20. Very nice pressie Fran. I have looked at this numerous times but just cant shift the niggling that it does not look as detailed or as polished as the X-Wing game. Shame as im a huge Trek fan but the Star Wars game has the better appeal with being fighters.

    1. That's the difference between them isn't it, fighters versus cruisers!

  21. The miniatures look very disappointing but I guess for just a game now and then they will do

  22. Thanks for the first impression coverage. Perhaps a quick drybrush/wash could bring out more details on those ships? Definitely can't get worse TBH. Not yet taken by the game components, although I'm a big Trek fan.

  23. A while back.... (mid-1990's) I had grown tired of always playing Axis and Allies" as a "war-game" So using the micro machines Star Trek Ships like those pictured... that was a cool"ship-to-ship" combat game... dice rolls... Once your shields were damaged enough...All "hits" get a "systems damage" roll as well... It was very detailed and took a while to play ... People that we knew really liked it as well

  24. Captain Picassa: 'Make it so'. My first Star Trek joke and probably my last.

  25. Oooooooo those are so fun!! A friend of mine has a similar game, but it's Star Wars. The game looked complicated tho...

  30. I would paint the buggers as that paint job would drive me bat shit crazy. But the Space Station is so cool, the Hubby would love that.

I'm sure you remembered that my birthday is on the 11th and I'm equally certain that you already have my gift in the post so as to arrive on time for my special day:)

  31. I will be interested to hear your final thoughts Fran!

It is strange... even though I have always been a far bigger fan of Star Trek than of Star Wars, this one has not appealed to me so far, while X-Wing has. Not sure why, but I guess it is due to this first release being based on the rather peaceful TNG, instead of the more warlike setting of DS9. So space combat in this setting seems somewhat wrong to me. I think I also hold the fear that it might just be a rehash of the X-Wing rules.

Oh and I I guess this is the nerd in me coming out, but "IRL" the Romulan Warbird should be roughly twice as large as a Galaxy Class starship.

    1. I did not know that.....DS9 and the Jem'hadar will be something to look forward to!

  32. I kinda wish I had more Star Trek knowledge so I could benefit from stuff like this

  33. The moldline does indeed suck. Perhaps go buy the diecast ships that have just come out and use them instead :D

    ReplyDelete
  34. I was looking at both these ranges in Orc's Nest in London today. The finish on the Star Wars ships is much, much better. As to the scale they had an original Enterprise (and several other extra ships)which was tiny compared with the NCC 1701D here, so they are making some attempt at scale but obviously not consistently.

  39. I'm still on the fence about the models, but the game itself looks like it will be difficult to resist.

  40. I saw some of these yesterday in the flesh and they were next to some X-Wing and the X-Wing stuff look much better. However its Star Trek and that wins for me. I have a black wash over them would make them look better
