WW2 6mm Aerial Dogfight Game "ME-109's vs Spitfire's"

Following the early Napoleonic game we had on Wednesday there was time for a couple of games of WW2 aerial combat between a couple of ME-109's and a couple of Spitfire's, the rules used were a version of "Dogfight over Flanders", a 6"x4" hex mat was used and the shenanigans began......

Everybody started with a card like this detailing their plane and ever changing abilities and stats...the German ME109's had a better climb but the Spitfires turned better.

My spitfire.....

6mm scale I believe with a English 5p piece for scale

Lunch...peppers (repeat on me like a fecker) and the good spam (sandwiches).

The bases had a dial to show height in 1000's of feet (no metric system at this stage).

The playing mat with Richard and John playing the Krauts......

A dice roll off showing who got to go first every turn.......

The first games were a lot like this for the plucky brits........

Postie did try to shoot them down but couldn't hit the side of a barn door (D11+ on a D20 depending on range of hexes).

Postie heading back to base.......

The second and third games were more cagey affairs with determined attempts to get into a scoring position....

I finally bag one of the gits.....

I ended up with a good card at the end and the only kill of the game.....

Really fun couple of games, the rules did take a while to get used to and it did feel like aerial chess trying to get into positon with split S, inverted S, loops, diving etc.....you rolled a D20 to hit, then a D6 for location and a D10 for damage (lower the better), you had to be at the same height to fire and only 4 models and a hex sheet to play.

The rules could be used for WW1, Modern and possibly sci-fi!

  1. Good stuff! Looking forward to a science fiction game.
And did you ask for spam, spam, spam, peppers, and spam?

  2. Looks like a very interesting game. I stumbled upon X-Wing while shopping yesterday and am feeling the pull of dogfighting.

  3. Quality. Sounds like a fun wee game. I was rooting for the Me109s though, the coolest plane of WW2.

  5. We play watch your 6 occasionally and I am usually ok on manoeuvring but ave Postie's problem of actually shooting things down.

  6. Interesting stuff and I think I have those rules buried someplace.
Lot of space though for so few models

  11. It does look like a fun game. We were playing 'Check Your 6' here for a while but it's kind of died out. Congrats on your kill.

  12. Sounds and looks great. The other good thing is you'd only need a few figures for a game to.

  13. Those rules do sound a little convoluted. I would find it better to fire on someone from above if you could because you have a bigger target.

  14. mmmm sammiches...... did you say anything else in the post?

  15. Never knew they were played like that, tons of rules too, and you are just a killer huh? haha

  26. That does look like fun! The last air combat I played in miniature, we kept flying past each other and never could hit. At least you didn't have that problem!

  29. Looks like a lot of fun, and I like the fact that for what looks like a 2D game you also factored in height with the dial, making it 3D, nice one.

  30. Looks like a blast. With that said... is there REALLY a good type of spam? Meat or email, I have yet to see it.

  32. Fun looking game with great models. Spam sandwiches - I am even more impressed. Coming from Hawaii, spam and rice is a delicacy. Best, Dean

  33. Aerial games are a lot of fun... as you say though, it can be hard to get any sort of result. We used to play a WW1 game Richtofen's War, which was a lot of fun.

I've got 'Bag the Hun' from the Lardies, which I hope to try out at some point.

So you 'bagged one' Ginger, Top Hole!

I can imagine the Monty Python banter too.

  35. It does look like 'aerial chess', as you suggested. It also looks like it would be fun. A thinking man's game.

  36. Nice pictures and report! Looks like you had fun!

    I don't like the peppers! ;-)

  37. You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to
be really something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and very broad for me.
I am looking forward for your next post, I'll try to get the hang of it!
