A Secret Service agent formerly in the Presidential protection detail but now sits behind a desk in the Treasury gets involved when the White House is breached by North Korean terrorists and the President and most of his cabinet are taken hostage, it's up to our hero (Gerard Butler) to save the day, save the kid and kick ass!
This movie has had several other movies referred to it such as Die Hard in the White House, Under Siege in the White House etc.....and I believe at one stage that Gerard Butler put his own money into the movie as the budget was been slashed as it went on.......
..........now this movie has some great scenes and ideas for wargamers, it's current with North and South Korea being involved, the action is very good, great effects, good cast (Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart, Angela Bassett, Dylan McDermott, Rick Yune) but it's a little implausible (a few plot holes maybe) with Americas current security standing that the North Korean terrorists would get this far into the heart of America in such numbers (especially a gunship but what do I know), several people have whined about thequality of the Secret Service and the level of patriotism and flag waving, it's an attack on the nation, an attack on the White House what do you expect, it's not that much in your face and I didn't see that much of a problem with any of it.........
.....what this is is very entertaining, Butler is a ruthless git and goes through the terrorists like faeces through a goose, a popcorn movie of the highest order!
By the way that lunatic great guy and Reject Seb is now on day 4 of his giveaways, go over there and try and win yourself some good free stuff!
There's another one coming out this year, White House Down, that's actually supposed to be better. (Ironic how films always travel in pairs, isn't it?) Almost saw this one in theaters. Will be a good NetFlix.
ReplyDeleteWell, now I know what it's about. Popcorn movie it is!
ReplyDeleteI do want to see it, but I need to find the time first! I'm still waiting for the oft rumored never begun Red Storm Rising!
ReplyDeleteFrom plot holes and current serving military perspective, my biggest concern is an EMP pulse attack. Enemies do have the capacity with civilian merchant marine to lauch a limited strike with soviet weapons that would mortally wound the power grid. While a concern, it's also a very good wargaming plot point!
Red Storm Rising is one of my favourite Clancy books, now that would be a movie.
DeleteID4 was a crazy star-spangled spectacle... made by a German, which I think somehow makes it more tolerable than it would be otherwise.
ReplyDeleteOlympus is a better film I agree. And Fuqua comes from my hometown, so it gets extra props there.
Excellent that he comes from your neighbourhood!
DeleteGood one Fran, on the list.
ReplyDeleteUm, yeah. I think I'm gonna pass on this. Propaganda.
ReplyDeleteWould I get to see Gerard's naked bum? nom nom nom.
ReplyDeleteNo!!!!
Deletehmmm maybe, maybe not. we'll just have to see.
ReplyDeleteMindless violence, no thought required to decipher the plot... what's really wrong with that? I will be giving it a go I'm sure. Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteThanks Fran, I'll put that on my to-watch-list.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Stefan
Sounds like a netflix one to me
ReplyDeleteOne to watch then.
ReplyDeleteVery good, Fran - "a few plot holes"?? :)
ReplyDeleteA gunship gets to fly over the white house, secret service act like the chines in Korea, a code that's needed and is gotten by torture but then a code appears by accident anyway!
DeleteI wish Gerry Butler would stay away from political movies and propaganda films ......
ReplyDeleteWill give it a go at my show, when out it comes on dvd
ReplyDeleteNow I quite fancy this one as well, great review.
ReplyDeleteDVD job for me!!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like fun. I don't know why people go in to these films expecting realism. Always makes me think of the theme song to Team America World Police. AMERICA..F*CK YEAH! Which pretty much sums up any Golan Globus movie from the 80's.
ReplyDeleteIf only North Korea was even capable of doing something like this. I heard that most of their "missiles" were actually fake and poorly constructed ones at that.
ReplyDeleteI love a good popcorn flick. Soon as this is out on DVD, I'm on it.
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with a popcorn flick. I don't want to see award-winning movies all the time. Sometimes I just want to sit back and let my brain just relax.
ReplyDeleteExactly how I feel Ms Mariah! This sounds like a movie for me.
ReplyDeleteThank you Fran I'll check it out on Dvd.
