Angry Lurker Honest Movie Review 75: Mission Impossible-Ghost Protocol (3 STARS).

Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol and fourth in the series.......

The IMF is shut down after being implicated in the bombing of the Kremlin and Ethan Hunt and his new team go rogue to clear his organisations name and save the world from nuclear war.

For the most part I like Tom Cruise and his movies, this is no exception as it ticks all the boxes for action and humour, there's a new team (Simon Pegg is now a field agent) and Jeremy Renner (not bad) and Paula Patton (ok) are new but Simon provides the humour with the banter between him and Cruise. They are after a madman who wants to start a war between Russia and America and it does go down to the wire.

The opening sequence is very clever and well done (always liked Dean Martins "Ain't that a kick in the head") and that's what the movie is, it's a stunning set of action sequences switching from different parts of the globe where they end up with impossible situations (i know that's what they do but....) that are more demanding than the last with assassin's, Russian's, dodgy equipment and bad guys fecking it up even more and there's the little hiccup....

......the movie is a little over the top with some of the action set pieces and I found it just a bit too long but worth anybody's Saturday night with a big bag of popcorn!

  1. Hmmm, Simon Pegg being in it has slightly altered my opinion of this movie.

  2. Sounds fair enough to me; I am curious to see Pegg and Cruise together, sounds like a blast!

  3. Pegg had some of the best lines. I thought this was the best of the series and would give it close to five stars.

  4. Got this on our LoveFilm list so looking forward to seeing it. I do think they need to put the franchise to bed now before it gets ruined, but they'll probably flog it to death like most things.

  5. Saw it recently and its not a bad action film if you can suspend your disbelief (and all understanding of the laws of Physics) for 2 hours. Cruise is a good actor but not a very believable 'action hero' and really ought to go back to making intelligent films with challenging roles, but I guess a successful franchise is just too lucrative to ignore.

Pegg is excellent in this film. Its good to see him continue to make his mark in big budget US films as he is a great actor and a really funny guy.

    Good review mate.

  6. I started to watch this on the plane on my way over for Salute, but fell asleep :) However, the first scene was great! I need to catch the whole thing one of these days.

  7. I've no axe to grind against any of the MI films, so I'll be watching it. I like 'wow' as much as I do 'realistic', films are to entertain not educate. As always thanks for the review!

  8. I'd watch this for Simon Pegg alone. Cruise was great in Born on the 4th of July, but he can be a bit hit and miss sometimes. But with a bit of humor and some espionage this might just work for me.

  10. He's not letting go of that franchise anytime soon. Odd he's never gone down the superhero route even once.

  11. I've never really been a huge fan of the MI series but since this one had Simon Pegg in it. I was sold. :D

  12. I still like the third one the best. Agreed it was a tad too long and just the same old action type story, not bad, but not as good as the third.

  13. For 50, Tom Cruise is awesome. Paula Patton is cool too except that India scene where she loads her eyes with Kajal(eye shadow). And slumdog guy Anil Kapoor only to reierate the India and Indianess, come on.
That french assasin was gorgeous right? Total eyecandy and I like Jeremy, he is handsome and interesting and for his lame cast, he cant be :)
I loved their virtual screen project idea and Budapest and I loved this movie.

  17. I confess I've not seen MI3 yet but I assume it won't be a big problem to skip and go straight to watching this one.

It's probably a movie Mrs K might actually watch as action movies are not normally her thing.

  27. Yeah I liked this one but my fav is MI III, perfect combo of action, babes, good military hardware, good acting and top notch highs and lows.

  28. I did not like the first two too much (too unrealistic even for an action movie)and decided that I would pass any follow-ups by. The fact, that I first thought the trailer for this one was a BMW comercial did not sway me.

  29. I actually loved it as a suspend-belief exercise. Hear Dubai govt. paid a shit load for the movie to be shot there, though I can't really see how watching the movie would convince anybody to visit. There was a sandstorm in the city without any sort of weather forecast/warning FFS!
