Angry Lurker Honest Movie Review 76: Super 8 2011 (3 STARS).

Got to see this but was unaware it was more of a kids/teenager movie but I had already bought the popcorn....

In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie (with zombies) and soon suspect it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disapearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in the town, and the local deputy and the friends try to uncover the truth-something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

I really knew little of this movie other than some sort of alien on earth movie and it was seen through the eyes of a group of friends making a movie set in the late seventies, it's a mixture of other movies like The Goonies, E.T., The Explorers etc......
It's well done and the period of time is well created, there are a few actors you will just about know but great performances from everyone especially the friends, the military are overbearing, aggressive and secretive while trying to deal with the situation (no surprise there!), the effects are good, the creatures are good, there's a little too much back story about loss and forgiveness but I got over it.

It's worth a watch but to me only once though!

  1. Ok, I really had zero desire to see this movie. None. I was forced to watch and was surprised that it didn't suck as bad as I thought it would. I was entertained. But, you are right...one watch only.

  2. Totally agree with your ET, Goonies, Explorers comparison – it's definitely a Steven Spielberg film through and through.

I did quite enjoy it myself, worth a look if there's nothing else on tv.

  3. This one had completely passed me by, but will certainly look out for it now. Thanks Fran.

  4. I'm undecided about this... so we're talking 'Stand by me' with aliens? Three stars might tip me over the edge though!

  5. I saw this movie at the weekend with my 13 year old. I thought it a bit pappy for my taste, but the lad enjoyed it. A fair review.

  8. I liked the youthful feel of this movie - it was my favorite release last year.

  9. I didn't really know anything about it at all, and as per usual it's not what I assumed. Still it sounds pretty generic, but it could be worth a watch.

  14. I remember this movie, I loved the home movie the kids make that runs around the end when credits role. That was pretty well done compared to the actual movie.
You are right, more of teenager movie than adult one. I saw battleship recently, give me 100 super 8 over that.

  17. Liked this movie, the train crash scene was incredible (at the cinema at least). Funny bit when one of the boys is showing his painted models to a girl to impress her and it works, now that's fiction!

  20. Saw this a few months ago and I was disappointed - not a patch on The Goonies, I thought. Useful heads up on Battleship too - missed in at the cinema: glad I did now!

    :O(

  27. I enjoyed this movie for what it was, easily the best train wreck I have seen in a movie..... good innocent fun...and Zombies! finally getting to watch their zombie movie at the end was satisfying.

  29. I'm gonna rent this when it comes out on DVDs. I hate watching in public theaters since there's too many people for my taste, I'd rather watch movies privately so nobody will disturb me.
