Angry Lurker Honest Movie Review 78: Prometheus 2012 (3 STARS)

...I finally decided to go see this much talked about Alien prequel.

A group of scientists funded by the Weyland Group travel to far ends of the galaxy to find their creators on a planet by deciphering cave drawings spanning thousands of years on Earth, what they discover is that they are doomed and possibly mankind as well.

This movie is visually stunning, I mean beautifully stunning, a good performance from Michael Fassbender but it is one of the most fucking all over the bloody place, plot hole ridden, of course it's a bloody prequel, don't care about most characters, scientifically retarded, so many questions, WTF? moments movie I've seen in quite a while....and that's why it got 3 STARS because I've discussed this movie with so many friends and the great heated arguments and questions that have ensued justified the rating and very, very few movies have annoyed and delighted me in such a long time...

.....is it worth a watch...yes...just so you can discuss how much it pissed you off or what was that about with friends.

Bring on the Prometheus 2!!!!!!!!!

  2. Yes! My thoughts exactly. Visually amazing, but so riddled with plot holes. The more I thought about it, the more I disliked this movie.

  8. I was already not bothering. Is it me or is it the more money spent on special effects the less gets spent on things like script and story lines?

  11. On my to watch list. I haven't paid to go to the flicks due to the barrage of ifs/buts and maybe about the plot etc. Will watch it in the end though.

  12. A sequel to a prequel? Isn't that the original?

  13. I've no chance of getting Mrs K to watch this one with me so I guess I'll just have to rent the DVD when it comes out and watch it when she is out of the house.

  14. I enjyoed it, not as an Alien franchise film, as it's so different from them that it's not really that kinda film, but it did explore obviously some of the questions. It is however a good sci-fi film in my opinion. Also what I didn't know is that it's not an official prequel.

Dare I ask what it was you didn't like.

    1. I honestly think the movie would have been improved by not trying to be an Alien prequel. They would have only had to change a few superficial elements, and could have told the same story without raising a lot of expectations with comparisons to the original franchise.

  15. When I first saw the 3 star rating I thought maybe your recent night shifts had addled your senses some. But then I read the review and you nailed it, they were exactly my thoughts and feelings about this film.

I'm a big fan of Sir Rid's work but this one is a mess, I have a feeling that somewhere out there, is a far better/longer version awaiting a 'definitive edition' after about a decade of 'special edition' and then 'directors cut' releases.

  16. Thanks for the review, Fran, I will use one of my free movie passes I got for my birthday to go see it...when they allow the use of free passes, that is. BTW, Aliens the only movie that I saw in theatres which caused me to by physically drained at the end of it, even Saving Private Ryan didn't have that effect. So, if this is anything like Aliens, then it will be a good one.

  17. If I had to describe the movie in one word I'd say, "flawed." It could have been so much better.

  18. Glad I saw it at the cinema, the visuals will not translate to the small screen – as you say it was stunning. The 3D worked well in parts, till about half way through when they clearly ran out of budget or couldn't be bothered to keep up the 3D.

The plot, at it's most basic level was ok, but it got bogged down and the whole thing became a mess. As you say, didn't really care about any of the characters – didn't know who/what the "enemey" was enough to hate. I think the film didn't know what it wanted to be, horror, action, drama.

Fassbender stole the show and Idris Elba was his usual very cool self, the rest I didn't care for much.

Definitely worth watching but it won't be joining my DVD collection. Roll on prequel number 2 to tidy up the mess.

  19. I don't like the director but the film should be good enough to watch on Torrents :)

  20. I´m waiting for the extended version to come out on DVD..J.cameron has said the DVD version will be up to 45 mins longer and explain the story a bit more. I just keep teasing myself with the clips on youtube etc.

  21. Nobody involved with science should say "It's what I chose to believe." Science, skeptic, and Sci-Fi podcasters have been saying the same. Dumb but beautiful film.

  22. Thanx for the review. Even the trailers were a bit confusing for me. I do want to see it but I'll wait for it to release on dvd

  23. The cinematography was beautiful and there were some interesting things, but the movie was a tad disappointing for me. As an Alien franchise I expected more action. I thought the explanation of the Giant and derelict craft was okay. I think 3 stars is very fair.

  24. I think 3 stars is fair. It was outstanding cinematographically speaking, but yes, was let down by plot... plot holes... and script. Ms Theron and Mr Fassbender stole the show, despite not being the leads.

Seriously... having a guy who creates a device to 3-D map massive cave complexes, immediately get lost after it has just done that, is just poor. "It's what I believe" was the most poorly conceived dialogue I've heard for a long time too... unless she was meant to be a Christian Scientist lol.

I'm happy with how it fits into the 'Aliens Universe' and I have seen worse films this year, but it is the only film that disappointed me, it could have been so much more.

  27. All I had to hear was the word Fassbender. I adore this man for the obvious reason of his stunning good looks and for the less obvious reason of his mothers heritage.

I would give the movie itself a chance simply because of the place Alien held in my life.

  28. I give movie a zero or a one. But even at a one, I'm being generous.

And I stayed clear of all reviews and blog posts, prior to seeing the movie.

  29. I really need to sit down and watch this soon.

  30. Only one person has honestly told me to watch it because it's awesome. I'm not gonna.

  31. For sure I will watch it so I can rant with the rest!

  32. You got it right about Michael Fassbenders peformance, i wish he had been in the entire movie, or it was just him or the rest of the film was as good as his performance. I liked the bit where the expert geologist got lost in a cave he had just mapped, it was so badly written and directed. Hope the next ones better.
