Angry Lurker Honest Movie Review 92: Django Unchained 2012 (4 STARS)

"Another movie with Leonardo DiCaprio in it that I like and who the hell was Zoe Bell playing (girl with axe)?"- Angry Lurker Honest Movie Review.

The boy took pity on me last night and took me to the movies with very little notice (41mins), quick rush around Bluewater (Hotel Chocolat for the other half, White Dwarf, Nachos and a drink with 10 mins to spare!).

I remember watching the original Django 1966 movie and sequel with Franco Nero and directed by Sergio Corbucci (banned in the UK until 1993), over the top, very violent and dubbed, Franco Nero does appear briefly in this new movie (nice touch).

This is a bloody entertaining and quite genuinely tense movie, quite bloody, disturbing look at slavery during the time in America's past, never been keen on Foxx but he's fine, DiCaprio is manic and great in his role as a bastard of a human being, Samuel L Jackson is downright creepy as a bastard of a human being, great performances all round (Don Johnson for one....)but Waltz is excellent again as a German bounty hunter who rescues/ buys Django freedom as a black slave two years before the American civil war starts, Django has information he needs and a friendship/partnership develops and an agreement to rescue Django's slave wife who has ended up as the property of DiCaprio and this is where the movie eventually heads for it's dramatic outcome.

The movie does tend to be a little disjointed at times but the real fly in the ointment for me was the scene where Quentin gives acting another go (awful, never been a fan even with From Dusk til Dawn), the time (165 mins did fly by quite well) and the ending while over the top brings matters to a satisfactory conclusion (nearly!)

A lot of laugh out moments, actio and great performances.......

  2. I haven't been to the movies in forever. But maybe once I changed jobs I'll have more nights free. Love bargain movie night. No coupons, but a cheaper price.

    Cheers and boogie boogie.

  3. Thanks for the review, I fill a bit hit and miss about Tarantino's recent films. But I might give this one a try.

  4. Samuel L Jackson really IS in everything. I knew it! Though I have heard nothing but awesome things about Django. I actually didn't know there was an original, that was banned even.

  6. Thanks for the review...I want to check this one out. With a little bit of improv, maybe you can game this one out on the tabletop? ;-)

  9. Unfortunately, Tarrantino and his backers have opted not to show it here in the Philippines until April, so I will probably catch it in Austrlia in early march if it is available. I am really looking forward to this one.

  10. Four stars - you really liked it! Not my favorite Tarantino film, but thought it was great. Waltz deserves the Best Supporting Actor award. And the scene with the eyeholes had me rolling.

  13. Did see it yesterday.
A topnotch movie, mixing the very serious with the sometimes downright hilarious. Anyone notice Terence Hill(to be honest dont even know if that is his real name ? GREAT to see him in a western of sorts. Quentin best leaves acting to...well actors altough it is a very short and explosive performance.

  14. That move could be shorter by at least one hour without any loss to plot and action. Waltz is class for himself, it's pure joy to watch him here.

  15. This was the perfect movie for you to see while you're painting Western figures. And it seemed to make you happy, which is a rare and beautiful thing :)

  16. I think this is his best work since pulp fiction, Jackson and decaprio are so over the top and very funny

  17. Not my favorite Tarantino movie but it's pretty damn good. I wish he'd just stay behind the camera, as well. I cringe every time he tries to act.

  20. Nice review, as it wasn't a bad flick, but yeah needed to be a bit shorter.

  21. I'm looking forwards to seeing it, so the review is appreciated... you've yet to steer me wrong. I can live with QT's impromptu bit parts and I do rate Leo DC as an actor, now that he's older. It's going to be a toss-up between Django and Gangster Squad for me this week.

  26. Good movie, enjoyed it very much! I tried Lincoln few days after watching this for something different. Didn't work for me.

  27. Definitely must see it then - my daughter has and raved about it to me (she's now a Tarantino fan too). Love the replicant quote from Bladerunner at the top of your blog BTW - recently bought a digitally restored director's cut of Ridley Scott's original. Drives my wife nuts when I watch it in bed (she's not exactly a SF fan!) - ain't life grand? Although I did make her watch Pulp Fiction the other day and blow me down if she didn't appreciate it! My fave Tarantino is True Romance - terrific story and very black humour - I wonder if Django will be better? I'll have to feckin' well find out then won't I !?!

  28. Wow, 4 stars! High praise! Ive wondered about this one...im about 50/50 on Tarantino movies, and Im not a big Jamie Foxx fan (or Dicaprio for that matter). I might have to check it out though.

  31. I thought it was a fantastic movie, with a similar vibe as Kill Bill. I agree Zoe Bell was a bit of a weird addition, I couldn't help but feel there was greater intent for her character. Indeed, I read on-line that it was intended that she was a horribly scarred bounty hunter (hence the bandanna) but it was dropped. Weird that they kept the focuses on her though.
