Angry Lurker Honest Movie Review 97: Oblivion 2013 (4 STARS).

"It depends on how you feel about Tom Cruise?"

A gun drone engineer on what remains of Earth after the war maintains the machines whilst battling the remaining invaders and dreams of another time but the discovery of a spacecraft brings everything he thought he knew into question.

I don't mind Cruise in a movie and he's good in this but his role could easily be played by another, maybe younger actor, this movie is about the visuals and the story, the director Joseph Kosinski (he previously did Tron which I wasn't that keen on and he's set to do the Tron sequel I believe) but here it's a stunning visual treat with a quite interesting story which I won't give too much away, it needs to be seen on the big screen to really appreciate it. It does have a few flaws and it does take some of the story from other sci-fi epics but as I said it is visually amazing, great effects and a good ending but also the music score is very effective with creating the visual landscape of a ruined Earth.....and the gun drones are fecking awesome.

Well worth your time depending on your Cruise phobia!

  1. I think Tom Cruise is a total douche bag. Otherwise, I think I'd be all over this movie!

    1. I'm with Melanie on this one. But you're dead right, it all depends on how you feel about TC. I also think he's getting a bit old for this type of role.

  4. Was unsure about seeing this one, though I don't mind Cruise - we watched Jack Reacher last night and he was alright in that.

  5. I've heard that pretty much it's good, but Tom Cruise might be a little too old. Unfortunately he's still too young to play an old and wise leader/mentor role.

  6. Read a ton of bad critics here, I think I'll save my money for Star Trek

  7. It was quite OK - but reminded me too much about Moon to be fully enjoyed despide being a quality Sci-Fi movie. Cruise is always good in any movie he stars in so I tend to put his off screen antics aside when going to his movies.

  9. Am not a Cruise fan... I find his acting ability quite droning...LOL. Guess we'll have to "know" our drones in order to build them for upcoming games... or do we already have all of those? And why does this particular poster picture remind me of the Hoover Dam? Yes, damn, yes, I'll go see it because I am a scyfy fan. Thank you Fran... I feel exhilaration starting. :)

  11. Well worth seeing. Quite frankly I was awed by how good the movie was.

  13. He doesn't thrill me. Even before all the drama surrounding his life. But glad you enjoyed it.

  14. Thanks for the review mate - I share your doubts about Cruise - personally I think he's a complete wanker BUT he does do some good movies. The story and the visual effects may well overcome the Cruiseloathing but I think I'll take your advice and see it on the big screen first.

  17. I saw the making off on TV a short while ago and it looked fine... which was interesting since I did not like any of the descriptions.

But Fran... how long has it been since we saw a review that was better then 3 Stars? ;-)

  19. When I saw this at Dezzies place I really liked the visuals and the story line looked cool. But Jaysus, Cruise needs to just lay down in a gutter somewhere and die.

  20. Thanks for the review! I'll go in spite of Cruise being in the movie.

  21. Nice image. I agree about Cruise, he's a great actor, and I was surprised to see he still gets roles probably meant for younger actors. Oh well, guess the producers can be sure of a profit with him. Best, Dean

  22. The movie is very nice, with fantastic images, but Tom Cruise bury the work of the other actors/actresses. IMHO, this movie deserved a younger and not so "all-star" principal actor.

  27. you're totally right, those menacing drones steal the whole movie!

I'd love to see them carry over into other films.
