Angry Lurker Honest Movie Review 69: The Three Musketeers 2011 (3 STARS).

Doesn't follow the book or the other movies that exactly but all the players are there and the tale has been given a fresh but slightly over the top new look....

I like a bit of a historical romp and this is another version along with it's predecessors of the characters from the classic book, this version is a little over the top with slow motion effects, airships (Leonardo Da Vinci blueprints (a botched mission to steal these at the beginning disbands the Musketeers) , damn good cast, implausible script and good action set pieces (a lot of CGI) but not enough of them...

D'Artagnan heads to Paris at the beginning to join the now disbanded Musketeers, he offends the three musketeers and duels are set, they fight the cardinals guards (good scene), get reinstated including D'Artagnan, try to stop a plot by Richelieu (Christopher Waltz) to take the throne, Milady (Milla Jovovich) is still double crossing everybody, Rochefort (Mads Mikklesen) is less a buffoon in this one, the French king and Queen are trying to fall in love with each other, Constance is the love interest, Planchet (David Corden) is back and still a slight buffoon, Buckingham (Orlando Bloom) is a scene stealing git and airships battling in the skies and I mean airships and of course the three musketeers themselves (Matthew Macfayden, Ray Stevenson and Luke Evans ....

...is it better than 1993 and 1973 versions, no just different!

People have been hard on this movie but Netflix it if you can and it's popcorn of the highest order, nothing else!

  3. Sometimes Tim and I will watch crappy movies and call it crappy movie night. Make pizza and popcorn and just enjoy the crapfest.

Those are fun. Especially for us, crappy horror movies.

Hope you have a good day Lurker.

    Boogie, boogie.

    2. Thanks bunches, Lurk.

I'm on a very short work week. And guess what? It wasn't even $1.99 each. Noppers. I got the whole lot for FREE. A $30 price tag, reduced to nada.

PS: I like your new banner. Is that you shooting a sleestak?

  9. I avoided this one as it did seem a bit over the top and I've seen the previous ones, but sure I'll give it a go eventually.

  10. Interesting. I should check this out. I like a good romp as much as anybody. In fact, more than many.

  11. I'm looking forward to watching this film. The trailers i've seen look quite good. It's good to watch some movies just to be entertained rather than have to think about it.

  15. thanks for the review A.L., was wondering if this movie was even worth a blink.

  16. You were a bit late out of the starting gate today Angry. I have Netflix and would give this a go. The Spawn is a fan of Bloom so she'd watch it and moon over him while I plug my ears and pretend I don't hear what she's saying about him.

  18. I missed this at the cinema because it had a very limited run so I'm looking forward to catching up with it. Milla's in it, so what's not to like?

  19. I love the book - why cant they make a damn Musketeers movie that is good? WTF is so hard to do??? Oh well - I had high hopes for this one when I saw Ray Stephenson in it, and when I saw the terrible reviews, I backed off. Maybe I need to reconsider...

  20. Agreed, I'd probably only catch this on Netflix if nothing else was on. Glad I did not spend $10 on this at the theater!

  21. Over the top can be fun. I also don't mind implausible and weird or steampunk elements thrown into an otherwise 'historical' movie... though I draw the line at hip-hop and 'modern sass' attitude that some directors decide to insert.. that's a deal breaker. Those airships look sweet: reason enough to give it a chance.

  22. Netflix it is. Definitely sounds worth a rental. I've loved Milla ever since 5th Element.

  23. I am a big fan of the musketeers, I'll probably end up giving it a shot sometime.

  24. Sounds like my sort of nonsense; not sure how this has passed me by? Many thanks for the gentle prod.

  25. I'll see the sequel if it's made. Mila's Vegas Showgirl "Mission Impossible" outfit needs explaining.

  26. A scene stealing git! Funny phrase. Sure, I'll watch just about anything on NetFlix. I figured it couldn't be that bad.

  27. This movie looks terrible. I didn't see it but someone pointed out that the airships has cannons but at no point during the movie did any of the characters thought of aiming the cannons on the balloon.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Probably won't bother with this one, not my cup of tea!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I dunno. I just doubt I'll really care to look for it.

  30. This movie would benefit from a significant increase in the number of musketeers. Three is not enough anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It looks alright, not sure if the rest of my family would enjoy it.

  32. I try to make it a point to watch every movie with Milla Jovovich. haha, I blame that crush on the fifth element. But it sounds like I could be entertained too. Definitely on my list of Movies I've gotta see. Thanks for bringing this movie to my attention. Was never aware of it.

  36. I like the three Musketeers book and films and I like airships as well, but together does sound strange. However, I'll still watch it with an open mind.
