Cavalier 2013 Pictures, Bring and Buy Problems, Where's Postie and Chocolate!

The Rejects went to Cavalier 2013 on Sunday (7 Rejects!!!!!) on our regular yearly jaunt, for me it was to stock up on those items that are a necessary evil (paints, brushes and spray) but also picked up some Victorian models from Ironclad Miniatures and a few MDF wagons and privies from 4Ground, it was a good day but marred by the theft of some models from  the Bring and Buy belonging to Ray! While waiting with Vinnie for Ray and Postie to turn up at the bring and buy to collect their stuff I noticed a little scene where several of the Tunbridge Wells members searching for a persons items but coming up empty and thinking that's fecking harsh and then Ray turns up to the same bullshit (I must admit the guy's attitude who dealt with Ray was a little off), I now hear that this is a regular occurrence at bring and buys and appears to be the main reason bring and buys have suffered over the last few years, I've only put something on a bring and buy one (Salute) and had no problems!

Met up with a lot of fellow bloggers and the Rejects had their picture taken a few times!

A sad and angry end to the day which was further marred by no McDonalds as Ray and Postie were too annoyed to eat!!!!!! Luckily Clint had arrived with some of his excellent chocolate and after some generous sharing during the show on my part we still had something to fill the bring and buy void and a cup of tea this morning at work.

Some pictures from the show (still couldn't find my camera so borrowed one), didn't take a lot as there were quite a few games from previous shows and just plain forgetting to take more didn't help!

Invasion of Denmark 1940 by Deal Wargames Club.

We found a perch and played "Where's Postie", the show was well attended but dropped off in the afternoon.....

Found a Reject!

Lee taking pictures of some rare spotted Rejects on the balcony.......

Some of the boys from Gravesend Wargames Club, nice guys and looking for members, we're dropping down for a game soon.......

An excellent "A Very French Civil War" game (my favourite) from the SEEMS boys........

"Drop the Bridge" game from North London Wargames Group, WW2 featuring a soviet aerial attack on a bridge......

The boys from Southend Wargames Club with their SYW game featuring the Maurice rules....

The box of chocolate from Clint.......

........dark goodness! Well everybody thought so including the missus (brownie points).

  1. That is so annoying. Comiserations to Ray. I've heard this happens at most bring and buys now - and it shouldn't come as a surprise. They usually involve a big scrum around the table - people can just reach in and grab something without comment - and if they then walk out the door with £100 worth of stuff with no adequate security then its only going to continue happening. I don't know what the answer is (maybe create a choke point where people enter and exit and put the 'till' there. If people then try walking out without paying they'd be easier to spot.

I would never put my stuff through a B&B. Ebay only for me.

    1. One staff member standing behind the scrum would be a help. Some one peels off with an item that maybe still has the ticket on it or lacking some form of SOLD marker. Intercept ask a few questions and if it's nicked prosecute, have it printed in the mags and watch the problem disappear from that venue.

More expensive but easy to do is have a couple of CTV cameras and DVD writer set up covering the tables. This would cost between £100 and £200 and only needs a plug socket or two. I'd also have a monitor to show that yes they are recording and this would have the desired effect.

Clearly the problem is now out of hand so if a wargames club wants to make the profit they make from such features they need to invest in bodies or equipment to reduce such acts.

The fear of being caught and the fact that the fact would be released to the gaming community which would reduce their chance to play against almost everyone would be enough to stop the vast majority.

I would also photograph each item brought onto the stand (quicker than you think, just need the ticket visible in the shot) put notices up that you have done this and any item stolen will be advertised as such with the picture with a reward for shopping the bastards. But it needs following through.

      Just a few thoughts

  2. There were two layers, very neatly stacked when I set off. I guess I should not have expected that to last too long. Glad you enjoyed them.

  14. Hi Fran,

Great catching up with you chaps once again - still struggling to come to terms with the actions of the thieving low life though!

    All the best,

  16. the best pictures: the chocolate and the French civil war. Ti be faire, when we know our French history, things were really pretty tense during that time.
A civil war might now have been impossible, especially in 1934-36

  21. Looks like a fun time there. That Denmark game looked incredible! Sucks about the d!ckhead stealing stuff from the bring and buy. WTF?!? But, at least you had chocolate.

  22. Looks like a great show apart from the thefts at the bring and buy

  25. There's some great looking games there, VFCW looked particularly impressive. It must have been very difficult to enjoy the day after such a dampner had been put on it.

  30. Great pics Fran. Shame on whoever it was that nicked Ray's figures off the B&B!

So, you guys were packing Clint's chocolate fudge (into your bellies) were you? Now how do you expect to maintain your svelte figures doing that? ;)

  31. I just vented my bile over on Ray's blog so I'll just say that too bad an otherwise nice day was ruined. The chocolates looked good. It just doesn't seem like a proper convention without McDonald's afterwards.

  33. Just seeing these photographs is getting me all unnecessarily excited about Salute! Rough end to the day though, better check eBay to see if the swine is stupid enough to put them on there!

  37. Lots of pictures...you know how to make me smile!! Looks like it was a good time...and the chocolate? Even better!!

  38. Looks like a good show Fran, despite the incident with items being stolen. As I said on Ray's blog, I really do hate people who steal from other hobbyists. To steal from a stranger is bad enough, but from a guy who's also partaking in your hobby, so you know what painting them means to someone.

  39. Some amazing tables/scenery there!
